This Mural is a tribute to the Vietnamese
community of the West End who migrated here. It is part of the "We are the
World" theme of murals in the West End and has many aspects of Vietnamese culture, which are
represented. From left to right we have a tree pagoda (photo 2), which are found
throughout Vietnam.
Next to the tree pagoda we have 2 schoolgirls in their school outfits known
locally as "ao dai." Pronounced 'ao yai' in Nam, the south, but 'ao zai' in
Bac, the north. The color is based on the women's age.
In the background there are the lovely karst rock formations of Halong Bay,
which is in the North of Vietnam and is a World Heritage Site for natural
properties due to the following 2 criteria.
To be outstanding examples representing major stages of earth's history,
including the record of life, significant on-going geological processes in
the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic
features; or
contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural
beauty and aesthetic importance.
On the right side of the mural (photo 3) is the Ben Thanh market, which is a famous
site located in Ho Chi Minh City. Outside the market is the scooter, which
is the traditional form of transportation now quickly being replaced by the
car.
